The way that his love used to hold him together. So he is letting go of that home and holding on to himself and letting that love go. My InterpretationWhen I listen to this song I picture a man thinking back to a person he loved and lost; a man, who has put time and effort into creating something functional, something for him and his loved one to share. However, their relationship becomes rough and hurtful to a point where it is dysfunctional. Devastated and furious, he learns to accepts what has come to them. My Interpretationto me this song is a description of life.
With half of his self gone, he has lost the will to go on . He climbs the tree, some aspect of his adventerous younger self still there. He no longer has the will to even be adventurous so he stays up there like a man who did something and cannot remember why he did but knows deep down he should. Now he's in jail for simply being an alcoholic - he didn't hurt anyone, he just was killing himself. I am holding on as tightly to him as he held on to me - and he did hold on. I'm working on a master's degree focusing on substance abuse treatment in correctional facilities because I need to know if his resources are adequate or if he is letting go. And I fear he is willing to leave and turn to dust. But he has two lovely girls (who he can't see because of a bogus restraining order from his junky ex girlfriend) and they are growing up away from the family - it devastates him.

The song is sung as though no one is listening, just the artist and his thoughts. Now he return to the present and passes on to be with his love. There are all of these things â€" houses, friendships, lovers, trees, us â€" and they all will dissipate into dust. Yet we hold onto it all for as long as we can, before we turn into dust ourselves.
I've stared at the clouds to avoid people, co-workers included. We are to walk with our partners and feel comfortable to share and express ourselves to prevent going off the deep end and help each other grow. When "going through it mentality" kicks in or begins, what do I or who do I turn to? General CommentAt the beginning of the song he is describing this house, and it seems like its not that perfect. I think that the "house" represent their love.

In life you have to reach certain things to reach love which most people don't accomplish... My OpinionThis song stirs something in me. It’s more than the lyrics; which are beautiful. But the way the artist sings this ballad.
To me it makes me think of my Dad — all the good times and all the lost time. His imagery viscerally conjures this ascendance and eventual decline. The artist isn’t overly lamenting the situation. He’s still fond of what he had and understanding of what is to come.

He finds shelter and protection in the tree, as close as he can get to what he once had, with the only one that knew it was real. Holding and being held… but it is only fleeting. Disintegration into dust, nothingness, resumes. Home is a metaphor for the love he and she shared, and dreams for a life together that the lovers built.
I don't think that this person necessarily passed away or left them, but perhaps that they "dimmed up", became unreachable to the person, without any ability to share a life with the person. It's a symbolic song with the 'home' representing the love between a couple but the love is broken. The way that the 'home' is built is the way that the relationship is built but is now forgotten- but still in the minds of those involved. It's also about the fear of letting go of the relationship and the memories that it holds. In the end though, I think the song is about something simple.
I love reading all the different perspectives. I think we can all safely say that this song speaks about a love that was once present. It begins in a reflective state by describing materials and contents of the house. This indicates that the subject has been here before but then left. They clearly are uneasy at other places but here, they feel "at home".
I am probably way off base here, but it is what I feel about the song. Provide song facts, names, places and other worthy info that may give readers a perfect insight on the song's meaning.
